For those who are always on the go, you’ll be happy to know that the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the Transcarioca route has recently started functioning. Starting at the beginning of the month of June, the Transcarioca has developed a direct route from Barra da Tijuca and Galeão International Airport (GIG). This project is part of the contributions to get ready for the 2016 Olympics.
So here are some details we were able to dig up: this route covers 39 kilometers and it does 47 stops in between. The Transcarioca has its own isolated lane and it’s restrictive to pedestrians only at certain spots. The overall time from the international airport to Barra da Tijuca will take a total of 90 minutes. Additional kinks are still to be addressed which will hopefully reduce the travel time to seventy minutes. It also runs from 5am until 11pm and leaves every twenty minutes.
Safety concerns are still questionable as there have been a few automobile accidents due to motorcycles driving on the bus’ designated lane. There are still additional plans to implement more bus routes such as the TransOlimpica. We will keep you updated if we hear anything!
