The art of real time film and sound manipulation comes to Rio for the Live Cinema festival on Saturday, October 4th. For the seventh year the festival showcases worldwide live cinema artists across the city and will run until Sunday, October 12th.
The free public festival features ten artists presenting live audiovisual performances and lectures at four venues; Oi Futuro Ipanema, Biblioteca Parque Estadual, Biblioteca Pública de Niterói and Praça Agripino Grieco in Méier.
Artists will manipulate images, sounds and data live during the public exhibitions. The first Live Cinema Rio started in 2007 by Marcia Derraik, a documentary filmmaker, with multimedia artist Luiz Duva and has been a popular feature of the alternative film scene in Rio de Janeiro since.
In Brazil, as throughout the world, Live Cinema follows a trend that started in the early 2000s with the figure of a VJ (Video Jockey). The art form has since developed greatly using updated technologies and following contemporary concepts. Today, Live Cinema artists such as Herman Kolgen, Ryoji Iked and the Brazilian HOL, create of a form of visual art that transcends the medium of film, space and time.
Oi Futuro Ipanema will host the opening night where Mary Gatis, Banda Sonora Duet and DJ Dolores will present their pieces. DJ and composer, Dolores worked for fifteen years in Brazilian film soundtracks, his work includes the 2012 Première Brasil winner for Best Feature Film, ‘O Som ao Redor’.
Also performing during the opening will be Maotik, a French artist who has worked previously with brands including Chanel and Omega. “I know Brazil has a very rich heritage and culture of music and visuals arts, and the Live Cinema Festival put it together in order to explore new languages,” said Maotik. “I listened to DJ Dolores for years now and we will have the chance to perform on the same night.”
During his first ever performance in Brazil, Maotik will present an installation entitled “Omnis.”
Other highlights of the festival include: October 9th at Biblioteca Pública de Niterói, where filmmaker Bruno Vianna will present the lecture, “Live Cinema – Concepts and Trends.” A visual workshop with VJ Robson Victor will follow.
Additionally on the 9th, at the Biblioteca Parque Estadual in Centro, the group Coletivo Print Scream will display their installation, “Urbano Xananico.”
The following night on October 10th, Biblioteca Parque Estadual will present Karina Montenegro, Pablo Tiscornia and Gabriela Bassani’s intsallation “Díspares” and Rodrigo Gontijo, Wilton Azevedo and Sergio Basbaum’s performance, “Futu Manu”.
The Biblioteca Pública de Niterói will then host Dino Vicente and VJ Robson Victor (together known as 2Vic) and their presentation of “O Que o Mundo Contém?” on the 11th.
Finally to close out the festival, Uaná System, a group consisting of multimedia artist Luan Rodrigues and DJ Waldo Squash, will perform live at Praça Agripino Grieco in Méier, a neighborhood located in Rio’s North Zone.
